After almost two years and many many news for the Papadakis family, I will try to update this blog so that all our past and future guests and friends will share our news.
Angelos Village did not operate the summer of 2009 and summer 2010 due to the severe recession that has affected Greece and Angelos Village. We will operate again next summer, so be prepared!
All these two years the family grew by two new members, two little girls that made our lives brighter. First came Erifilli (Harria's and Ted's daughter) on January 1st 2009. Yes new year's day. I have been amazed with her ever since.

Then one year later Vasso and Kostas had another little girl in January 2010.
Her name will be Lea, after her grand mother Lea.
The new arrivals and Elena (Vasso's first daughter) have kept the family very busy and very happy. We spent the summer 2009 with no work at the hotel and we missed that a lot but we used our free time to go to the beach and to go on holidays - first time after many years - together with our little daughters. Angelos and Lea were a bit more relaxed and Gianna was in Athens , where she lives for the last four years.
As you can understand, having the hotel closed is a bit awkward for our family, since we have spent all our summers there since 1985.
This summer started with the hot days of May (about 30 degrees Celsius) and the whole family headed to the beach for a cool breeze. Erifilli was jumping in the water happily and Gran pa Angelos and gran ma Lea took Elena to the beach too.

Jacqui and Ber (correct spelling?) were in Angelos Village from the 4th of May. They were among our first guests for this season. We had the chance to have some nice talks by the pool and at the bar, since it was not so busy and they also became good friends with Greg (who took Mario place, when Mario got a job at the airport).
They left some days ago and today Jacqui, who is a professional photographer, you can see her work at www.jmcsweeneyphotography.co.uk

Happy New Summer season!!!!!

Angelos village is open since the 1st of May and new guests keep coming in! During this past winter some new permanent residents came to the hotel and the cat families are growing every month. I only managed to take the picture of one of them, so here she is the new kitty of Angelos village, expecting already her kittens.

The sun is shining and Spring is everywhere at the hotel as you can see in the pictures. In the morning and during sunset there is an amazing smell from the roses and the other flowers that have bloomed now. Angelos has taken good care of them during winter and now the garden pays him back by offering us such beautiful flowers and smells.

We all are here and we want to wish our past, present and future guests to have a happy summer and an amazing holiday and we promise to keep trying to offer the best possible for your holidays.

We, Vasso (on the left) Gianna (center) and Harria (on the right), the daughters of the Papadakis family after a few emails, requesting information about different issues on how to organize a trip to Crete, think that it would be useful for all our future and past guests to read below:

TAXI FROM HERAKLION AIRPORT TO ANGELOS VILLAGE The cost is around 35 euros. There are plenty of taxis exactly outside the arrival gate of the airport. Usually there is no need to book in advance. If you arrive late at night (after midnight) the price can be a bit higher. If you need to book a taxi in advance, just send me an email and I will take care of it. You will need to know your flight number and the arriving time.

PUBLIC BUS SERVICE IN CRETE
There is a very extensive and low cost bus service in Crete. The nearest bus station is 500 m away from the hotel and buses for Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos pass by every 15 minutes.
For timetables, prices and directions you can ask at the reception of the hotel at any time.
The buses in Crete are an inexpensive and reliable way to discover the island or just go to the next village.

INFORMATION FOR SIGHTSEEING
At the reception of Angelos Village we have gathered the opening hours and all the important information for the well known sights of Crete. You can find all the information you need to best arrange your next day trip in Crete and also we are happy to suggest places or give you "inside information" about the non touristic places (places to visit, to eat, to swim) around the hotel and around the island.

CAR, BIKE HIRE
There are plenty of companies that hire bikes and cars in the area so even in the high season (July August) you don't have to book in advance The prices are negotiable according the type of car/bike and the days you will hire it. At the reception of the hotel you can get all the information you need.

The Hall of Fame Part I

As the summer is coming to an end I think that it is time for making the "Hall of Fame - Summer 2007" in Angelos Village that will keep the memories alive during the cold winter, until next summer.

Jeff and Annie, the day of their departure...in the middle of the Greek Night. It was their second time in Angelos Village, this summer, a living proof that they had a great time with us, and we had a great time with them. See you both next year!!!

Last but definately not least in Hall of Fame part I , Ben Gordon and me the day of their departure ...not too much to say, they left lots of memories of great talks and funny moments. We really miss you !!!! till next year...

Greek Night with live Greek music and special food

Friday night we decided to have some fun and we organized a greek night with live Greek music and special food! At first the weather was a little cloudy and we all thought that it wasn't a good idea but it didn't rain and I think that everybody had fun!
Ermioni (for those not familiar, our cook) prepared flambe main courses in front of us and our guests, playing with the fire
and she also prepared a delicious and impressive buffet of appetizers (see picture below) and desersts.
Tolis adn Mario were VERY helpful, admiring the buffet and making fun of everything and specially about the chickens (see photo below)....

...We all sat by the pool having dinner...

and some of us had good fun around the bar...(Vicky, in white, was in her honey moon!!!)
...or IN the bar (like Trish and Gareth from Newcastle who unfortunately they had to leave the greek night early to catch their flight back home)

The night ended with everybody dancing around the pool -except of some of the boys that claimed that they couldn't dance because they had hurt their leg. We tried to make them better with some raki shots and in a few minutes some of them recovered and even DANCED!!!!!!

Today in Greece is the celebration of the names Sophia (Wisdom), Agapi (love), Pisti (Faith) and we send our best wishes to our favorite Sophia who was in the hotel 2 weeks ago and she was such a big help for us that we wanted to keep her together with her mother Androula (who would take care of our beauty) and Odysseus (who was great help for Mario).

Mario very inspired prepared four different cocktails for the marvelous Subi, Kiran, Sharan and Pav (you see the on the photo with Nella and Danny).

Subi (the mom) with her three daughters (Kiran, Sharan, Pav) stayed with us for two weeks and we enjoyed very much having them around since they remind us very much of my mom and our family's three daughters (see previous pictures). The girls were brave enough to do Bungee Jumping at Star Beach!!!! and adventurous enough to explore Crete with a car. And the last day they also bought us a present to prove that their stay in Angelos Village was more than satisfactory. Thank you all very much!

Lewis with his dad Dennis are having fun in the pool with Trudie watching the amazing pool star-Lewis- who is doing his best to impress everybody and win the hotel lottery!!!

The "Raki man" the man who survived Mario's raki, Robert, with Mario (responsible for many others hangovers because of the raki and suffering from hangovers himself because of the raki)...and the happy Hannah.

With Nella and Danny we spent hours talking and brainstorming about my November holidays (exotic destinations warm in November). But the funniest thing was that, because they both have been working in family places like ours, they always wanted to help us when the place was getting busy and I had to remind them all the time that they are on holidays and not supposed to work!!! At the beggining of August we started the Hotel Lottery. The winner will get two weeks in Angelos Village for free for the summer of 2008. Many people found it a good idea and chance to come back so they keep putting their little enveloppes in the green box at the bar as you can see on the following photos.

...and so did my sister Gianna who decided that she could be the one to win, and so next year instead of workin at the hotel, she would make her holidays in Angelos Village. Impossible of course because as we explained to her even if she was the one to win she would't take the holidays....it has to be one of our guests!!!! Anyway I took aphoto of her only to make her feel better...
The winner will be announced the 31st of October 2007 in this blogspot and also in our website (www.angelosvillage.gr) which will be ready then.

Rich, Carol and Ellie (who adored Ermioni's "baklava"-traditional greek sweet) were among the firsts who took part in the hotel lottery and also as promised they wrote a wondereful review for the hotel in tripadvisor. In my turn as promised I made Rich the lottery "star"....

This is my first try to make a video of the hotel, based on Danny's and Nella's idea. To be honest I saw one of his videos of Angelos Village and so the next morning I tried to do the same!
It was taken very early in the morning, the time I was waiting for the famous and numerous Friday arrivals...
The video starts with the sunrise as viewed from the bar and the pool. It was the 1st of September, a very hot day with no wind at all.

Dannii (always like a little princess in pink) and her parents, Mark and Amanda, visited us two weeks ago and little Dannii (we also loved the name) immediately became our favorite little model, so we all here decided that she would be our model for the season.

Making lemonade.... and the "Kids Band"

Our gardens are full of lemon trees (in fact very productive lemon trees loaded with lemons this time of the year) and our hotel is full of children (in fact loaded with children, this week), playing and having fun in the pool, around the pool and in the gardens. Last Thursday afternoon the kids decided to pick up the lemons from the trees and to make lemonade to offer to all the guests.
The pick-up went great, they had also the water, sugar, glasses and everything else they needed, and the result was lemonade for all of us!!!!!!

Friday night, Elisabeth organized a performance for little Dannii, who was leaving that same night. On the video that follows you can listen to the "kids band" singing . Elisabeth is seating on the last stool left and there is Dannii in the middle and Natalie on the right.

Glen and Kate (on the picture the day of their departure) came for holidays in Angelos Village...they were living in room number 23 AND THERE, on the balcony GLEN proposed to KATE giving her a beautiful ring with a pink stone and SHE said YES!!!!!
Congratulations and the best wishes from all of us in Angelos VIllage.
The wedding will be sometime next June and Glen and Kate promised to let us know and to send us some pictures!!!!
It is a first for the hotel and we all were very excited!!!
I think that we will rename their room to "23-Get engaged room"...

Another Friday

It is a hot Friday, today, here in Angelos Village, and we are getting ready to say goodbye to some really good new friends like Gary and Anne Marie. Anne Marie is sad since yesterday because she does not want to go home and Gary is offering to help at the bar so that they can stay a bit longer. In the picture you see them with Karen and Seanus that have already left 2 days ago, promising to come back soon and Elisabeth - our "good mood fairy" of the bar and the pool - who stays until Sunday.

Some of the kids (there are plenty this time of the year!) are also leaving, missing most of all Tolis who became their best friend...

The weather in Hersonissos and Crete is beautiful with a very pleasant see breeze - called meltemi - during the day, but we expect a raise of temperature, that could be up to 40 degrees Celsius the next 2 days. Everybody stays by the pool for as long as possible. The bar and the pool are the most popular facilities of Angelos Village this time of the year, even more popular than the restaurant.
People are renting cars and every evening they return full of new experiences and discoveries of Crete that they are anxious to share with their friends and Mario who these days is mostly preparing cocktails for children (alcohol free of course), together with beers and angelos village specials for the adults...
Samaria gorge, Spinalonga and Vai are the top 3 places to visit in Crete these days, according our guests...

Our New Logo is ready. We are really pleased with the work done BUT we are waiting for your comments.
Other than that the week has been very busy, the temperature is ideal and the bar is every night full of people that became friends there. On Friday, or should I say early in the morning on Saturday we waved goodbye to Christina who left after two weeks in Angelos and promised to send us some pictures and comments.

Baby Helen (the first grand daughter of the owner -Angelos-) came at the hotel for the very first time in her life and everybody was really excited to see her in her tiny little dress.
Vasso (the mother) is back -even if it's only for the weekend and she was extremely welcomed especially from our German guests, as she is the only one who speaks German fluently! The rest of us just try...
Gianna, the little daughter of Angelos is also helping out at the bar, in the mornings and she influences everybody with her good mood.

Lily and Rose

Lily and Rose came for holidays separately, met in Angelos Village and they quickly became friends. In the picture you see them with Afroditi (our receptionist) the day of their departure (26 June 2007). It was a pleasure for us to have them here. They were always in a cheerful mood and very friendly so they set the tone around the pool...We hope to see them again soon.

The Heat Wave still here but we, in Angelos Village, found the way to work hard under the circumstances!!!! From now on we will be working in the pool and I am the example of this !!!!! As you can see I spent all the afternoon in the pool....

The Heat is on!!!!!

This week has been very hot...the midday temperature is 35 to 39 degrees Celsius (95 to 102 degrees Farenheit). Our guests enjoy the pool day and night with the help of Marios who is serving water, refreshments and cooling cocktails at the bar nearby.

Ermioni (the cook in the picture) has transformed the menu so that the food in the evening is not too spicy or too hot.

Afroditi religiously stays at the reception, to assist our guests to plan their trips in the island or to help them by giving them precious advice on how to deal with the heat.
The heat gave us some beutiful sunsets (like the one you see on the picture) and also with the help of the sea breeze, romantic and quite evenings at the bar by the pool.
The temperature will lower on Friday when it will be lower by 10 degrees Celsius...
...as for baby Helen, the most famous person in Angelos Village, she feels the heat, she is growing fast and we hope that she will pay us a visit together with Vasso in 2 weeks.

Departures Arrivals and recipes

Friday, the day is full of departures and arrivals! Our visitors leave with their luggage full of memories, new friends and often the desire to extend their holidays or at least to come back soon. We wish them a safe trip home, waiting for their comments, pictures and news.
On the same time, people arrive, ready to start their holiday in Crete!

The weather in Hersonissos this week has been very good and quite hot. The temperature during the day is 28 C and there is almost no wind. It seems the perfect day to go to the beach and enjoy the sun and the sea. Don't forget your hat, your suntan lotion and safely enjoy the day.

Tonight's menu is being prepared by Ermioni (our cook) who gave us the recipe of one of tonight’s dishes. I copy it here for a British friend who left yesterday claiming she can not cook cretan food!!! Try it, to enjoy a Cretan meal remembering your visit in Angelos Village...

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

800 gr. fresh green beans, trimmed

150 ml extra virgin olive oil

1 large onion, cut into thin slices

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

2 small potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes

675 gr. fresh tomatoes or 400 gr canned tomatoes, finely chopped

2/3 of a cup hot water

3-4 Tbs finely chopped fresh parsley

salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions:

Cut the fresh beans in half, if too long and place in a bowl filled with cold water. Sautee the onion in plenty of olive oil, add the garlic and as soon as it begins to give off a smell, throw in the cubed potatoes. After a couple of minutes have passed, add the tomatoes and hot water and allow it to boil for 5 minutes.

Next, wash the fresh beans well and add them to the boiling content of your stewpot, seasoning with salt and pepper according to taste. Cover the pot and simmer for about 30 minutes. Sprinkle with finely chopped parsley and if needed, add extra hot water. Cook another 10 minutes, until the beans are very tender. Serve hot with a big piece of feta cheese.

The Papadakis Family Welcomes Baby Helen!!!!

With great joy and emotion we welcomed, last Thursday (7th of June 2007) baby Helen, daughter of Vasso and Kostas. That was the day I became finally an auntie!!! She is healthy and beautiful, as you can see from the pictures, looking exactly like her father. After five days in the hospital, mother and baby are now at home in Herakleion. We look forward to have them with us in Angelos Village, but I think that this will take a bit longer...

Relaxed place run by a lovely family

Just come home from a lovely week at Angelos Village. We were met by the owner at 4am and he was happy to greet us and show us to our room. Our room and the complex were very clean and tidy. The bungalows wont win any architects awards, but this is how it is in Crete, simple! Our room was clean and tidy and we had a great view to the sea and the coast beyond. If anything we didnt like the look of was the huge electric pylon and cables which go straight over the complex. After looking at the huge structure for a while it became another piece of the landscape and it was no big deal.
The pool area was compact but clean and the bar and restaurant were right next to it. This was really cool as you couldnt help but get to know people whether you were having a lunctime drink and snack, or a late nightcap served by the lovely Mario who was very polite and helpful but at the same time you felt he was on holiday too! The whole family who run the hotel were brilliant. Whilst we were there the owners had their first child and the whole family disappeared for the day but the skeleton staff just got on with it and everybody was happy that baby Helen arrived safe and well.
Nearby and a 6 euro taxi ride away was what we called "The Villages" which were 3 interlinked villages above Hersonissos which were lovely. No loud music blaring out, just a great range of bars and tavernas. You could eat out every night and day and only see a fraction, such was the choice.
As for the hotel, the food at breakfast was fairly basic and aimed more at the Europeans than the Brits, but who cares? It was a change not to have bacon and eggs and fried bread!! The evening meals were typically Greek/Cretan. Once again no Michelin stars but great grub all the same. The best meals were at lunchtime-salads to die for and only 3 euro's max.
The main thing we noticed about the complex was how quiet it was. 800 yards away was the bustling tourist centre but we felt we were miles away and no noisy roads nearby which was bliss. It seemed as if all the guests respected each others need for peace and quiet. Saying that, quite a few of us got chatting at the bar and then we all made a bit of noise but it was done with the respect of other guests in mind...very rare!! All in all, we loved it (and we are fussy at the best of times) and we are very likely to return.
